Bush Hog sizing

I am looking at a bush hog for my B2710HSD + FEL, and can't decide between 4' and 5'. My situation is that I need to mow some steep roadways and am concerned about traction. Certainly front end weight will be used. The grass can be pretty thick at times, but it has been mowed before. The difference in weight between the so called "light duty" and "heavy duty" models is significant. The decks in the surrounding community here tend to get trashed pretty badly by rocks, so heavier is probably better.

Suggestions ?

I think a big factor is the roughness of what you're cutting. I got a 5' that I use with my L3130 but since I only have grass and light scrub (nothing bigger than 1/2" or so) I wish I had gone 6' so it was wider than the tires to get closer to fences and such.

Go with the 4'. Most importantly, it will be more stable on slopes. Also, you won't see as much engine bogging in the thick stuff. My uncle has an L2250 (21 PTO HP) and it handles a 5' unit fine, but tends to bog down in thick brush. ....

the larger B-series will handle the 60" hog with little problem and more horsepower is always good but you can beat that with a hydro. The 48" will just barely cover wheel tracks if at all and makes it harder to look good. Ask the dealer if you could take it home and just drive over the area of concern with the mower to see if the tractor can handle it. ....

I am using a 5 ft. rotary cutter on my L31302wd. Previously used it on my older tractor. The dim's(just went and checked) are 62-1/2" and the dim's for the outside to outside Tractor tires are 64". Approx weight is 700#'s.
Tracks very well and I use it to clip over 10 miles of 10 ft. wide fire lanes. And yes, can get up real close to field fence with a good close cut.
